VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System
Inside the Boiler Room
Ever wonder how we keep everyone warm on cold days at the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center (RMRVAMC)? All thanks can be given to our team of boiler plant operators who are onsite around-the-clock.
RMR Boiler Plant Operator Roy Davis (see photo) allows us a peak behind-the-scenes to learn about the work he and his Facility Management Services (FMS) team provide us every day:
“Someone is always here. Besides making sure we have clean steam throughout the hospital, we also monitor room pressure for the operating and patient rooms. Along with water temperatures for MRI machines, we are responsible for checking the water for hardness and chlorine levels.
After hours, all calls throughout the hospital come through our phones. Depending on the call, we can dispatch a technician to fix a problem. We also monitor all fire alarms and elevator problems and dispatch technicians or respond to Aurora fire calls to the RMR; we are in close contact with VA police and upper management.
Sometimes this place can be noisy as we are taking your phone calls. Our team of boiler operators work with all the trades here: plumbers, refrigeration mechanics, carpenters, electricians and housekeepers. We also take care of all preventative maintenance and try to keep our plant clean.
I work with a bunch of very dedicated people who all love taking care of everyone who comes through the doors of this complex.”
